Even the Bad Times

by Kristine Zorilla

One time, I was randomly browsing through my Facebook feed when a friend suddenly posted a quote about a fight with his current girlfriend. Out of nowhere I just had the urge to add a comment: “We cannot change people, we can only love them as much as we can.”

He noticed my comment and we ended up having a quick chat. He thanked me for the advice afterwards and told me that he felt better after our conversation.

I always feel glad whenever I get to comfort a good friend. But then, I thought of reflecting on my own advice – Are we really willing to just love people? Are we patient? Are we selfless?

The common reason for the failure of a relationship is when one party becomes more concerned of his own interest that the other. It is sometimes hard not to want to change our partners becomes as individuals we have our specific preferences of perfection.

But if you’re wondering why your relationships keep failing, maybe because all this time you’ve been selfish. You’ve probably become more concerned of your satisfaction that his or her affection.

Friend, don’t bring up the past by trying to change someone according to your preferences.

Love is not about the good memories, but those times when he or she’s in her worst self but you’re still willing to listen to his or her woes. Love is not about the time you bonded over romantic campfire at the beach, but those random Sunday afternoons when you’ve no money and you can still have a great time while dining at 7/11. Love is not just all about the good times, but even the bad times.

If it’s the opposite of everything I said above then it’s not love.

Let’s spend our year of mercy by loving the special people in our lives, our family, our friends and even our enemies. Have a blessed Sunday! ♥
